Matt Champion is something else. Not like when your teacher/parent/friend/whatever angrily glares at you and proclaims that you are “SOMETHING ELSE” with a whole bunch of exclamation points, but different – musically delectable despite his sorrowful pondering. Brutally honest and transparently lustful for love and companionship in a world largely lacking just that, Champion’s cocoon continuously comes to include the listener’s own mind – a despairing envelopment that is welcomed all the same.
AliveSinceForever, hip-hop’s quickly expanding conglomerate, gracefully grows with each and every release that it bestows upon our fortunate ears. From Dom McLennon to Kevin Abstract and MiC Kurb, its artists aesthetically show and prove with only the rarest failures. Matt Champion is the latest in a lengthening line of youthful acts that ASF has opened its doors to, and “Die With Me” – his debut release as a part of this tremendous team of talents – more than justifies his newfound inclusion.
Earnestly elaborative with his words and carrying forth beautifully brilliant unspoken emotion, this record cries out to those in dire need of an audible crutch. Producers Kiko Merley and prynghndsemoji wrap Champion’s night-stricken soul in a blanket of dreamy atmospherics before evaporating into something far darker and minimalist.
