Montreal singer Love Mansuy’s pleasant voice lingers, hauntingly, atop an apocalyptic soundscape constructed by producers The Fameless and Byron in Love’s latest single, “Super Sad”. Deep, melodic synths and reverberated, industrial snares simultaneously sustain and disrupt the beat’s surface – one that Mansuy appears on the brink of diving into. He knowingly acknowledges the predictability of a troubling, life-threatening death scenario with a love interest, spinning a story of succinct subtly that ends with an interpretable conclusion.
“Don’t fall deep into something, or you will drown,” sings Mansuy with the sweet lull of a sinister, Calypso-like figure. I cannot speak to the fate of the female character in this track; I, for one, am entranced.
