Saba hit us hard with his stunning song “401K,” spinning a parallel between financials and the fateful violence plaguing Chicago. Then came a string of similarly promising singles (“Burnout,” “Butter“) that showcased another, more reserved side to the Windy City emcee. Off the strength of those songs alone, we heavily cosigned the Pivot Gang artist and eagerly anticipated the project those tracks would call home.
Today, alongside the release of another stellar full length from an up-and-comer named Kevin Abstract, Saba liberated his 14-track tape, ComfortZone.
It does not disappoint.
Though it would be premature and borderline sensationalist to call this record one of the best of 2014 thus far, it certainly boasts the raw skill and consistent material needed to maintain staying power. The aforementioned, already revealed tracks still shine, but previously unheard compositions like the pensive, melodic “Welcome Home” prove that Saba had a lot left in the tank. The Chicagoan even produced a healthy portion of his tape himself, only adding to an already applaudable effort.
