Headway Remixes is the latest release from Al Lover, a Bay Area-hailing producer who we previously wrote about when he dropped the Reverb Rap mixtape. For this new effort, he’s stepping away from hip-hop and his typically psychedelic ways for something crunchier and more bass-heavy. He was handed the stems for tracks from Asheville, N.C.’s Headway Recordings label and went to town on cuts from acts like Villages, Slaw, and Housefire.
I know, I’m not that familiar with those names, either, but I put my trust into Mr. Lover when I fired up this tape and I can tell you with great confidence that he didn’t let me down. The aforementioned trippy element is still prevalent here, though not as heavily, and it’s blended with more experimental and sometimes even ambient sounds. It ends up playing out like something you might expect from Odd Nosdam.
