We haven’t heard much from French producer Somepling since last year’s CloudLoad project, but that’s mostly on us and not him. You see, he released two efforts, Mellowbay Keys and Life Per Day, this year that seemingly slipped under our radar. So when I saw that he dropped a new mini-album, Finally Lost, this afternoon, I wasn’t letting this one get by us.
Somepling introduced the EP with the following message on his Bandcamp: “It’s not about the trip or the destination, it’s about getting lost…”. That sentiment can be felt throughout the four tracks on Finally Lost, which is equally jazzy and vibrant. It’s also, as you might have expected, heavy on the sample flips. You’ll hear woodwinds and pianos interplaying on opener “PaperWashed”, head-twisting drums on “Melt Kownia”, and underwater harp sounds on “Flowering Gram”. These sounds all come together cohesively, though, as Finally Lost plays out like the soundtrack to an afternoon daydream.
