So The Weeknd Didn’t Actually Sample Portishead on “Belong To The World”?

the-weeknd-hairEarlier this week, Portishead’s Geoff Barrow took to Twitter to voice his frustrations upon hearing the Weeknd‘s new single, “Belong to the World“. As I initially wrote in my post on the track, I was kind of happy to hear someone sampling Portishead’s “Machine Gun”, if only because it could lead to more fans for one of my favorite groups. Well, it turns out that the sample wasn’t actually cleared, according to Barrow.

But wait! Barrow has now said that the Weeknd didn’t actually sample or use a sound with enough likeness to “Machine Gun”. That means there’s apparently no infringement or call for credit, Barrow wrote on Twitter. Hmph.

seems like Barrow is saying that the Weeknd is lying, moreso than Barrow is suggesting that the sample wasn’t a sample.
