I stumbled upon a Russian producer by the name of Smuff tha Quiz a few days back and I have been digesting his recent Boomtrees project ever since. Yes that’s right, I said boom trees. Since the cover art for the project green, I am assuming our Russian friends know a bit about good weed. But, I digress. Smuff tha Quiz must have bathed in ’90s hip-hop, which I am confident he would refer to as the “golden era.” I did not know what to expect from his instrumental work, but it grew on me for sure. The first track, “Suicide,” much like the rest of the tape, gives you that organic boom-bap sound that many modern-day artists are trying to bring back to music. It even samples a mob screaming “the real hip-hop”—reminiscent to Das EFX‘s 1995 record “Real Hip-Hop.” The 6-track beat tape will keep you nodding your head and is guaranteed to add that ’90s-nostalgic ambiance to a room near you.
