Skywlkr – Impressions [Compilation]

Detroit-based up-and-comer Skywlkr came through this week with Impressions, a collection of his instrumentals. These beats having been used and abused already by Danny Brown, Main Attraktionz, Boldy James, and others, there may be a slight deja vu scenario here, where you might feel as if you’ve heard them before.

The drum programming is always surgically precise, as evidenced on the mid-album neck snapper “Ponzy Scheme”, the bass tends to have little trouble filling the room, as on “Bruiser Brigade”, and the aesthetic tends to favor washy, soft-focus paranoia (as on “Sephiroth”) rather than big, bombastic battle beats. While it’s no secret Skywlkr beats are more than functional as vehicles for MCs, they play well as instrumentals too, making effective use of the extra space and establishing Skywlkr as much more than an accomplice to killer Detroit rappers.
