Following the growing line of artists who embrace obscurity with their choice of stage name comes Shawn Kemp. Shawn Kemp being mine and many other kids’ favorite NBA player in the 1990s, is also a maker of beats from Richmond, Va. His 17-minute album i thought i lost you blends some of the new style of instrumental hip-hop as well as some touches of the old. One example of this is the song “30 people are staring at me”, which has a drum pattern Kurtis Blow would sound at home over. It’s good to hear something fresh coming from this hip-hop movement devoid of lyrics.
