The story behind DJ 2-Tone Jones’ latest mixtape, Shaolin Jazz: The 37th Chamber, is that he created the project after linking with writer Gerald Watson. They were inspired to make the mixtape after seeing those re-imagined Wu-Tang Clan album covers that were made to look like classic Blue Note releases. Or, more simply, Wu-Note, as created by artist Logan Mills Walters. The results of Watson and Jones’ work is the aforementioned Shaolin Jazz mixtape that blends the best of the Wu with joints from the Be-Bop jazz era. I know that mash-ups can be the absolute worst sometimes, but this really, really works.
