“Voices In My Head” is the closing track on SBTRKT‘s forthcoming sophomore album, Wonder Where We Land, which is set to drop Sept. 29. In describing the track on his SoundCloud, the mask-wearing producer revealed that it was a fitting end to his new project, a sentiment that becomes apparent once you hear the song for yourself. There’s a definite closure to the sound of “Voices,” whether it’s in the brooding keys and synths, Emily Kokal of Warpaint‘s haunting background vocals, or A$AP Ferg‘s chilling verses.
In actuality, seeing Ferg’s name in the guest lineup left me wondering if dude could really pull off an appearance on a SBTRKT record. Sure enough, he silences any doubt with a drugged-up, melodic series of rhymes about being high off the haze on the Summer Jam stage and taking a series of narcotics that have left in hearing, well, voices in his head. It’s paranoia-rap to a T—and yes, the Bone Thugs-N-Harmony influence is obvious.
