Rome Fortune‘s latest video, lifted from his stellar Small VVorld EP, is titled “Four Seasons,” but you can think of it as the fourth dimension. Specters of pop culture’s past return to the present day and bask in an archaic television’s glow, sharing (hoarding) screen time with Fortune and featured guest OG Maco.
Visual homages to Seinfeld and Road Runner snake through the video’s frenetic progression. In one scene, Rome flashes a grin, his head superimposed above the body of a CNN host. Another finds the Atlantan hilariously ‘advertising’ his very own, self-starring late night TV show (would you watch Rinsin’ With Rome?). Full-frame animation and voluptuous women trade off with doubly meta odes to the aforementioned EP’s stunning cover art. Josh Goldenberg and Rahil Ashruff, the duo that is GOLDRUSH, make themselves out to be nothing less than visual visionaries as they exhibit one editing trick after another.
Rome is in a league of his own right now. Some will avoid him like Ebola because of that distinction, but most others will show undying support (a friend of mine still rocks his “Cowboy Pimpin'” tee with pride). He’s hellbent on fending off attempts to group his style and sound in any one direction, displaying that chipped-tooth smile of his as he waves to nonbelievers. What’s more, he’s getting better. Stagnation isn’t an option, and neither is glossing over this contemporary work. Watch it below and listen to Small VVorld right here.
