Rock The Bells 2013 Lineup Revealed, Features Ol’ Dirty Bastard and Eazy-E Holograms

rock-the-bells-2013Remember the outrage/hype surrounding Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg’s 2012 Coachella set after the, erm, hologram version of 2Pac took the stage? Well, expect the same feelings once this year’s Rock The Bells festival makes the rounds, because both Eazy-E and Ol’ Dirty Bastard will be “resurrected” for the event. ODB will make his appearance during Wu-Tang Clan’s set while rumor has it that Eazy-E will “join” Bone Thugs-N-Harmony during their performance.

As for the rest of the lineup, it’s pretty damn solid and features the likes of Danny Brown, Brother Ali, all four members of Black Hippy, Tyler the Creator, Earl Sweatshirt, Kid Cudi, and many more. You’ll be able to catch most of them as follows:

  • Sept. 7-8: San Bernardino, CA
  • Sept. 14-15: Mountain View, CA
  • Sept. 28-29 Washington, D.C.
  • Oct. 4-5: Rutherford, N.J.

UPDATE: HipHopDX was in attendance for the Rock The Bells lineup announcement and has published some clarifying (sort of) quotes from Guerilla Union head Chang Weisberg regarding the posthumous performances.

“I can confidently tell you that I have spoken with RZA and Cherry Jones and Divine, who is RZA’s brother, who helps manage Wu-Tang Clan. I’ve talked to Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and Tomica Wright. I shared with them the vision and the knowledge and it was after those discussions that they entrusted me with the responsibility,” he shared, noting that if they objected, he would have backed out of the idea.

“A lot of fans want to immediately downplay things or say, ‘That’s whack.’ Really? Is it that whack for ODB’s catalog to have an increase in sales and to take care of his family? Is it whack that Eazy-E can inspire generations of fans who will never get a chance to see him?”

“This is bigger than Hip Hop. I want to see Marvin Gaye. [My kids] will never get to see Bob Marley but if they could see Damien and Ky-Mani, and Ziggy and their dad on stage together, maybe that will inspire something that I can’t even fathom right now. It’s really about inspiring people that it is possible.”

“I think it’s going to look and feel like what a lot of people say is a hologram,” he clarified. “You never heard me say hologram, right? It’s a combination of multi-media and a lot of effects.”

  1. When they did it with Tupac it was great only because it was so well done and completely a surprise. They should have kept the holograms a secret here too, if only to make it seem like less of a gimmick.
