So you know how Rick Ross, Jay-Z, and Dr. Dre’s collaboration on God Forgives, I Don’t was pretty lackluster? Well, then you will find solace in knowing that they’re getting into some trouble over “3 Kings“. It turns out that the sample on the track—Crowns of Glory’s “I’m So Grateful (Keep In Touch)”—might not have been properly authorized for use. At least, that’s what Crowns of Glory, a gospel duo, is claiming in their lawsuit against the three rap giants, producer Jake One, and Universal Music Group.
The owners of “I’m So Grateful”, Clara Shepherd Warrick and Jimmy Lee Weary, are suing for the following: copyright infringement, unfair trade practices, unfair competition by misappropriation, conversion and unjust enrichment, calling for an injunction to prevent further distribution, performance, or commercial sale of the song, and are seeking an undetermined amount in damages.
They also claim that the song’s video helped build its popularity, something they take issue with as well because:
“The video includes very graphic depictions of drug use, vulgarity, nudity, gun violence, criminal conduct, actions demeaning to women and many other items that are certainly inconsistent with Plaintiffs’ wishes for how Plaintiffs’ song would be portrayed.”
Oof. Revisit “3 Kings” below if you want. [via]

thats an explanation definitely ..;-)
but i ain´t completely against trap beats btw. it´s just too much and too easy to do..
They should be sued for wasting my time listening to this wack ass track with these rappers that need to retire
Trap music is on the rise cuz teenagers these days are bored and spend they day behind the PC, so shitty music like this gives them the chills, haha. The whole sample situation has always been tricky….
there is a sample clearance on the record. so i guess they got paid plus credited. maybe they now think it´s not enough or whatever. or gives them a bad reputation. anyway. it´s basically not about this sample clearance issue in this case, it is about making rapmusic less sample based in general because of the fear of getting sued.
How is it greed, though? Guys made the original song, and should be compensated. How would you like it if someone made millions off your original work and you didn’t get anything?
i think jake one did his thing on the beat. greed kills sampling skills. no wonder 808/trap producers are on the rise with their two tone children melodies..
