Rakim – “New York To Cali” (Unreleased Circa 1995)

I don’t tend to dwell in the past, but when an unreleased Rakim from 1995 finds its way on the Internet—you can count me in. I was skeptical of this song, especially since it hadn’t made the cut on any of Rakim’s previously released albums. I couldn’t have been more wrong, though, as this Dominic Owen-produced “New York To Cali” is an absolute banger. Let’s hope the Master has more joints like this sitting in the vault, because new Rakim always makes for a rather splendid day.

Wow, what. If he’d released an album of songs this good (or even close) that year, the rest of his career would have been completely different. This is exactly on timeline with what 1995 sounded like; by 1997,
The 18th Letter sounded dated compared to what was current.
