NYC’s first lady of sub-shaking fusion of pure, real-ass instrumental hip-hop and uncut, brain-scrambling alien bass music is unquestionably Pursuit Grooves. Her most recent Soundcloud upload, titled “What U Believe”, staggers along at a dissociative pace over ethereal synth pads while a bruising bassline and some vocal samples provide some movement.
Where most producers tend to skew towards either boom-bap or bass music, taking influence from the other but showing a preference for one, Pursuit Grooves splits the difference more or less exactly- the kicks and snares are pure, dusty, neck-snapping hip-hop, but the bass synths are painstakingly crafted subharmonic bombs with enough weight to rearrange your dental work and just a pinch of midrange to remind you what you’re missing if you try to play this one on your laptop. The net result here is a trippy, laid-back slow-burner directly from outer space that’ll simultaneously tighten up your subwoofer and relax your shoulders.
