Brooklyn-based bass producer Pursuit Grooves’ new (via Soundcloud) live release, titled 2012 & Reaching, ought to be subtitled “in which our heroine works a pair of SP-505s like they owe her money.” Taking an unusually strong interest in preserving the ‘live’ aspect of electronic music performance, V. Smith creates thirty-five minutes of spacious, subby deep house and post-dubstep, with hardware flair harkening back to old-school NYC hip-hop and the forward-thinking production that landed her on seminal British bass music label Tectonic. 2012 & Reaching is tasteful, minimalist and dignified, which are a few adjectives I’d like to see returning to bass music in 2012. If your concept of beauty involves heavy doses of low frequencies and sparse beats, then crank up your subs for this stream- you’re in for a treat.
