Young Lungs has crooned many a quality hook, but none matches the starry-eyed adoration filling “505,” his latest single. Lungs, infatuated with an unnamed girl to the point of disorientation, sounds coolly distant despite his words, which suggest he is anything but apart from his companion. The production, courtesy of frequent collaborator Cian P, is chilling, thanks to high-key piano notes and eerie synths, and unnerving, with shakers akin to a rattlesnake’s bodily warning.
“505” is heavily indebted to the Arctic Monkeys song of the same name; the cerulean guitar licks appear here, as does a couplet from lead singer Alex Turner. The contemporary sample choice pays off, creating a sonic space you can easily lose yourself to. Lungs is lost, too, and he wouldn’t have it any other way — young love is a trip worth taking.
