Rootnote Collective captain Ruff Draft has received a certain level of Potholes favoritism, which happens when we cover an artist who reliably churns out excellent music for two years. The forward-thinking, positive producer can work magic with some software and a good ol’ MPC. He has delivered present-minded pieces unconcerned with reflection and anticipation; he’s created music that actively attempts to tap into memories both old and not yet lived. “Overt Miracles/Beliefs” blends the three together.

Buried guitar riffs (shouts to GoYama), pattering shakers, and synths that twinkle at the slightest breeze ebb a stream of subconscious energy that pays no mind to time. Here’s a song worth dreaming to — not in bed, with closed eyes, but on your daily commute, or while cooking breakfast in the morning. It’s an aid to imagination.

The slow, inspired beginning is a moment of awakening. As the instrumentation layers atop itself, the rain forest breathes its first lungful of night, great cities ready for a new day, rare reptiles with deep, endless eyes peer out at the strange and mysterious world around them.

Swim down the eternal river of forgotten hopes and pursued dreams by pressing that play button. Illusion Fracture, Ruff’s forthcoming LP, releases Feb. 10.
