Phil Ade – “The Letter”

For whatever stupid reason I can’t think of right now, I slept on Phil Ade’s 2009 mixtape, Starting on JV. Upon checking out some tracks on his Bandcamp page, though, I realized that I really needed to give this young Maryland-based rapper-singer a shot. As if that wasn’t enough, he’s now prepping his The Letterman mixtape in coordination with Don Cannon and OkayPlayer for release on July 6. To tease us all, he’s put together a video for single “The Letter”, a track filled with battle rhymes and soulful production.  It’s looking like I’ll have another mixtape to blast in my car this summer, along with Pill, Freddie Gibbs and a few others I’m forgetting right now. Goddamn you, Internet.
