Pharrell to Ditch Rapping for Singing on His New Solo Album

Pharrell Daft PunkMore often than not this year, we’ve heard Pharrell use his voice to sing during his guest appearances and not rap. He even embraced his singing voice on his solo single, “Happy“, which was one of several new songs he recorded for the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack. And it turns out that there’s a good reason for that: He’s simply not fond of doing the rapper thing now that he’s older.

In an interview with Complex, Skateboard P revealed that his decision to go with singing over rapping is “the difference between 30 and 40.” He was 30 once, he explained, but now he’s 40—”[And] I’m not rapping.” The reason for this explanation is simple: He’s going with a singing-only direction on his next solo album, which will be the follow-up to 2006’s In My Mind. As he told Complex, “I love rapping. But—something’s coming and I’m not rapping on it.”

I am greatly disappointed but I will buy the album day 1 for production alone. I was hoping for another rap album or mixtape though considering he sings hooks/verses on most of guest appearances and sings on NERD albums.
