Pears – Sterling Postures [LP]

Pears (Gary Morris) first caught my eye when I came across his single “Barnacle Jive”. An infectious little beach jam that ends up getting just about every inch of your body to sway by the time you are done with it. So infectious, in fact, that it inspired me to throw together a makeshift summer mix, which you can check out at my tumblr! Moving on, I did a little investigative work and discovered that he released an entire album via AMDISCS, for free! The name of the project is Sterling Postures, which features more of that simple, catchy musicianship heard on “Barnacle Jive”. With that, I also found that before coming to Brooklyn, Morris lived in Cape Town, South Africa. A lovely country where yours truly also happens to be a citizen of. I am not too well versed in the indie music world of the Rainbow Nation, so it is always nice to see someone represent like Pears.

Along with Sterling Postures, be sure to check out the rest of AMDISCS‘ catalog, which has a ton of other free gems waiting to be unearthed. Enjoy!

I definitely understand, and hip-hop is by no means forgotten! Thanks again everyone for the continued loyalty and support. We hope to keep Potholes as one of your favorite sites to visit!

I say bring on more diversity as long as hip hop continues to be the foundation! I like the idea of expanding to other types of music so props for doing your own thing.

  4. I for one, love the fact that there is some more indie rock and even electronic getting some space in the blog. It’s nice to have a blog with some diversity and appreciation for other music.

  5. Thank you so much for the response, it really is appreciated and refreshing to know that potholesinmyblog actually cares about what their fans think. I agree with your point on tastes changing and believe firmly that music lovers should not be closed-minded, but indeed listen to a wider spectrum of music. I listen to a wide spectrum of music ranging from Magnetic Fields to Lee Fields and everything in between. I just feel a bit confused because I am so used to this site being a fantastic HIP-HOP site that a bit of change jolts my everyday routine. For my indie stuff I check out Pitchfork or sterogum and mainly Okp, 2dope, and potholes for my hip-hop. I hope you understand where I’m coming from, it just isnt what i’m used to is all.

    Hey Alfie,
I appreciate the concern as well as your continued loyalty! The answer to that question will probably not fit in this comments section comfortably, so I am going to give you a brief explanation and leave the rest for a full blog post later on.

Times change, tastes change, and Potholes is a prime example of that. While hip-hop has been and always will be a true love of mine, all the writers here feel that we embody a much wider spectrum of music.

While Potholes In My Blog is in reference to the classic De La song, nowhere on the site does it suggest that we are only a HIP-HOP blog. We are a blog that provides coverage on quality music. Speaking of De La Soul, one thing that made them so great was that they appealed to such a wide audience. Prince Paul was known for sampling just about every genre of music and people were able to embrace that!

You can expect a full explanation shortly, as you are not the only one to bring this matter up… Thanks again, your opinion is taken very seriously!

  7. Forgive me if I sound a bit rude, but isn’t this supposed to be a HIP-HOP blog? Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy indie music (My girlie is an indie chick) and listen to it even when she isn’t around. But isn’t this supposed to be a HIP-HOP blog? I mean, the title alone is a play on words to the classic De La song off their debut album (Genius btw)I just feel that this site has been veering off course to what has kept me coming here day by day and I thought it should be brought to the attention of the hard-working writers of potholes. I just want the HIP-HOP back, indie is fine, but don’t go overboard. Thank you for everything.
