We tend to celebrate anniversaries of all types with something physical, tangible. Birthday cake marks the anniversary of our inception, roses and a nice dinner the anniversary of marriage—the list is endless, and varies from person to person. The anniversary of an album release is no different, especially when that project is the heralded sophomore full length of the Beastie Boys.

In honor of Paul’s Boutique turning 25, the current owner of the space formerly known as Lee’s Sportswear in Manhatten accepted a proposition to bring back some Old New York aesthetic to that immortalized, increasingly changed corner. Starting this morning, artist Danielle Mastrion will paint a mural of the PB artwork that depicted this very spot. The musically inspired restoration serves as a special moment for hip-hop.

Currently, the corner of Rivington St. and Ludlow St. is home to a sandwich shop called Wolfnights (below). This news comes eight months after LeRoy McCarthy—who also advocated for the aforementioned mural—proposed a plan to retitle that intersection “Beastie Boys Square” last December.
