The monotonous state of the rap game is disheartening at times, even to the most veteran music critic. Pioneers have carved their own lanes through years of dedication only to have hundreds of others simply follow in their footsteps. It is refreshing when you come across an artist who is pulling from their eclectic range of influences to craft their own style. Virginia native Paris Jones is doing just that.
Jones took it upon himself to drop a new project every month for the entire year. We have witnessed an organic growth over the past seven months and may have now heard his best work to date. His latest release comes in the form of August, a six-track offering that serves as a breath of fresh air. It is entirely self-produced and boasts a range of vocals and rapping that grab your attention as you cycle through the new project and, at times, are confronted with powerful content that will leave you thinking. Described as “soulful, experimental, jazz influenced and hip-hop driven,” that’s just what you get—a mix of numerous flavors crafting a captivating cohesive project.
