The 12 Best J Dilla Remixes

Spacek – “Eve”

Spacek, the British electronic trio led by Steve Spacek, received the Dilla remix treatment for their 2000 single “Eve”. Complete with guest vocals from longtime Dilla collaborators Frank-N-Dank, Dilla turned this smooth jam into a bass-heavy hip-hop banger. The major accomplishment here being Jay Dee’s ability to intertwine the contrasting vocals of Detroit rappers Frank-N-Dank with the dreamy voice of Steve Spacek.

Busta Rhymes – “Woo-Ha (J Dilla Bounce Remix)”

Busta Rhymes’ 1996 banger got the laidback jazzy treatment thanks to J Dilla on the 12″ single release. The Rampage-produced original was nothing to sleep on, but we think the late Detroit producer added another worthwhile dimension to this classic hip-hop cut. And as the title of this remix suggests, there is a ton of that signature J Dilla bounce found throughout.

Keith Murray – “The Rhyme”

The funny thing about Keith Murray’s 1996 single “The Rhyme” is that it was already mellowed-out on the production tip. But when the Ummah—Dilla, Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad—got their hands on it, the track somehow became even more languid. We’re talkin’ ice cold, cooler than a polar bears’ toenails-type-chill. Chyeah.

The Pharcyde – “She Said”

J Dilla had a strong influence on the creative direction of the Pharcyde’s Labcabincalifornia, producing nearly half of the beats in all. “She Said” was one of the cuts he didn’t get to handle behind the boards, but he decided it would be a good idea to put his own spin on the record in any case. The end result might have actually put the original to shame, too, but we will let you decided that for yourself.

  1. Oh yea, nice list. I also like One Little Indian (dilla rmx) – Little Indian and Masta Ace – Sitting on Chrome (dilla rmx)

  2. the Fourtet remix kills on the dancefloor too — seen it work a crowd who knew nothing of Dilla or hip hop in general.
