The 10 Best Das Racist Songs

The 10 Best Das Racist Songs

This past Sunday brought with it the saddening news that Das Racist—the NYC-repping trio of Heems, Kool A.D., and Dapwell—has indeed called it a day. While many will argue that this is all perfectly fine given the increasingly strong solo output of Heems and Kool A.D., I’m personally still kind of bummed about it. The way they played off of one another was both complementary and low-key brilliant.

And to highlight some of their finest work together as a team, both on their own records and those of others, Will Salzer and I compiled 10 of our favorite Das Racist songs. I’ll be blunt in stating that these aren’t the most essential joints or anything like that. But they’re the ones we keep coming back to, be it for the sharp cultural references and/or criticisms or for the heavy-as-hell production.

Narrowing down the list was really hard. Our discussions got really heated. Andrew threatened to murder me like more than once. I do enjoy Speaking in Tongues though thanks for sharing that!

I hadn’t actually ever heard the original. That’s pretty funny. Das Racist sound so much better over that beat

I mean, there’s a pretty good reason that the “Speaking In Tongues” freestyle never made it onto any mixtapes: http://vimeo.com/13829812

Using a Dipset instrumental is a lot more risky lawsuit-wise than using a Wu-Tang instrumental or an MF DOOM instrumental.

Speaking In Tongues is one of my favorite DR tracks lyrically, never made it on a mixtape though http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZgBYnSD2T0 Also, why do you call out the dopeness of Swate, and not include it? (I know it was technically released on Heem’s mixtape, but it was released as DR material before that) Way too hard to limit these guys to ten tracks no matter what though, so props on the list

The BBG and Exquire tracks are both fantastic, though, I love them both as much as DR’s material as a group.

I would’ve included their “freestyle” over “Speaking in Tongues,” “Amazing,” “Rooftop,” “Ek Shaneesh,” and man, I just love “Brand New Dance.”

Man, “Rapping 2 U” is probably their best all-around song. I’ll let the bars speak for themselves:

Heems: “Could get a real job, only rap weekly/ I don’t need rap, told you rap need me.”

Kool A.D.: “See me grace the pages of your favorite Condé Nast publication/ They ask me all about my views on relations of races/ And cut out the radical shit for space, that’s racist.” (In addition to every other line in Victor’s verse.)

Shit, even Lakutis goes in: “What you mean my money’s no good here?/ Why, ’cause I made it?/ Bitch, you know I made.”

“Roc Marciano Joint” and “Ek Shaneesh” are also great reflections of their lyrical prowess.
