Treacherous territory here, but FaltyDL has gone in with a remix of Mos Def’s “Umi Says”. It would appear he’s taken the difficult task head on and succeeded, remixing a song that we here at Potholes, along with many of our readers, hold in such a high light. Striking what seems to be the perfect balance between the original and a more danceable groove, FaltyDL did a damn good job with this one. Check out the track below and let us know what you think in the comments.

That is a pretty weak remix. The drums for the main groove are so predictably club-mix, and using one line of mos’ in an almost 6min track is hardly a deeply thought-out interpretation. You could use that beat and put almost any catchy, soulful line of any rapper over it and call it a remix. I was excited to hear this, and quickly bored.
John liked the edit, so he posted it. There’s nothing deeper going on here.
Let’s say I was able to do something better. Would probably make me look like a salty producer/artist/whatever who is mad he doesn’t get as much blog love as another artist’s track that in my eyes is not that good. This is not the point though.
If people aren’t able to judge something unless they have the talent to create something of better quality the whole profession of any critical journalism would be impossible and dead. Any entertainment would have to be praised by everyone but the better entertainers themselves, same goes for sports, art, … you couldn’t even tell your barber or coiffeur he/she made a shit job messing up your hair just because you can’t cut hair yourself. Sorry, but try again, this was a bad argument.
In the end it’s just my opinion and by no means do you have to see it the same way. If you like it, cool. But I do wonder why blogs repost objectively mediocre music (yes objectively, there are certain quality standards in mixing, doing somethign fresh and creative, having clean sounds when it comes to music that should be expected and that don’t interfere with “taste levels”) when there’s so much awesomeness around. Cause that artist here has 20,000+ fans?
I don’t even care about mister FaltyDL or this blog in particular but this is one example that really puts me off.
Seriously? So now people can’t criticize something they can’t do better themselves? If that were to be true, blogs like PIMB would not have exsisted. I mean, are the reviewers on this blog obliged to give an album 3* or up because they aren’t artists themselves?
It’s easy for someone to criticize something when they can’t do better or at least they can’t prove they can do better. I like the remix. It doesn’t take away from the original at all like some remixes do. I cannot see anyone really dancing to this. Maybe swaying their hips..
really? that string and the transitions are horrible and he’s stomping this beautiful, soulful mos def record to mush with this unimaginative 4/4 cliche house beat. i love that mos def record and i feel that “edit” is just disrespectful. it doesnt even have a recognizable end or beginning its just some shitty loop of a classic record with shit drums.
