Mo Kolours – EP2: Banana Wine [EP]

London-dwelling mad Mauritian Mo Kolours just released (via a free Bandcamp download) the highly anticipated sequel to last year’s EP1: Drum Talking, and it’s pretty awesome. Titled EP2: Banana Wine, Mr. Kolours takes us through some inventive territory, fusing laid-back boom-bap with the folk music of his homeland for a decidedly surreal effect. A versatile vocalist not bound to any kind of musical convention, Kolours sometimes comes off like a way more groovy, tropical Gonjasufi- less tortured by demons than annoyed by mosquitoes, but using his voice like an otherworldly instrument.

His percussion, too, warrants mention, as he accents his wonderfully minimalist production aesthetic with all sorts of percussive gadgets and toys evocative of the faraway place he no doubt occupies in his mind. Mo Kolours is nothing if not a clever and unique producer, and EP2: Banana Wine keeps a consistently breezy, sunny, outlook on his unusual psychedelic beatwork, making this an ideal download for these upcoming warm spring days and (especially) the warm summer nights to follow.
