MellowHype – Blackenedwhite [LP]

Today we’ve got the latest release from Odd Future Wolf Gang, that clique of rappers, producers, skaters, and visual artists based out of Los Angeles. In the last year or so, we’ve seen releases from the group’s de facto leader, Tyler, the Creator, whose brilliant Bastard has been getting a lot of spins from some of the Potholes staff, Earl Sweatshirt, and most recently, Domo Genesis, whose bombed out Rolling Papers was the soundtrack to my summer for a bit. This time Hodgy Beats and Left Brain are up at the plate, working together for a second time as MellowHype for the just released Blackenedwhite. Blackenedwhite is chock full of Left Brain’s hypnotic, serene beats and Hodgy’s quick witted bars, backed by guest appearances from Tyler, Domo, Earl, and more. Oh, and it’s free. To quote Tyler, “Download Blackenedwhite or suck Steve Harvey’s dick.” Hey, I’m just the messenger.

Wasn’t meant to be their album cover but just a pic of Hodgy and Left Brain. That’s the best we could find back then.

At the end of the day, stuff only gets posted here if we like it. This ain’t a blog about what everyone else is listening to. No hit jockeying, no hype machine coddling, no bs. Just beats and rhymes. I’ve been listening to these OF dudes for a couple months now, before any of the glowing press write ups started rolling in. I like the stuff. I think it’s pretty damned good. That’s why it’s up here.

Interesting. I went from never having heard of this crew to seeing them everywhere in the space of a couple weeks. This ain’t bad but I’m weary of falling for the hype.
