Mayer Hawthorne – “No Strings” (DJ Jazzy Jeff Roller Boogie Remix)

By now you’ve all hopefully heard Mayer Hawthorne’s “No Strings”, the Classixx produced track he released alongside the announcement of his latest tour a couple weeks back. “No Strings” saw Hawthorne’s ’60s soul-infused sound fast forwarding to the ’80s, more specifically the early half of the decade, when shmaltzy, earnest pop nuggets controlled the airwaves. “No Strings” was wall-to-wall keys and synths, full of the wonky electronic flourishes that were all the rage during that era. Well it looks like DJ Jazzy Jeff has gotten ahold of the thing and turned it inside out. Jazzy Jeff’s “Roller Boogie Remix” snatches the tune out of the AOR, easy listening era and gives it a funky, post-disco vibe. It’s all about the percussion here, as bongos, handclaps, and tambourines fill out the mix. Jeff’s mix adds an extended instrumental coda, letting the track ride out on a bed of sedate, tinkling keys.
