Not So Cold, Cave is the new album from the Orlando musician Maximino and yes, the record doesn’t really resemble the murky electronic music produced by Cold Cave. There are sounds flowing throughout that could have been produced by instruments without circuitry – piano, strings, woodwinds and Maximino’s falsetto is not unlike that of Tom Krell’s aka How To Dress Well. The style can range from evil elf forest music on “Banter Chanter” to R&B on his cover of Sade’s “No Ordinary Love.” It’s a refreshing reminder that a voice made for rhythm and blues doesn’t always have to be tossed over a Stax-esque backing track.
