Mix up some minimal garage pop with a Malibu surf session and you get Vancouver-based bros Makeout Videotape, whose fuzz-loving Ying Yang LP was just let loose on Bandcamp. This is definitely one of my early favorites of 2011. Frontman Mac DeMarco croons good vibes a la Chaz Bundick and Noah Lennox over mesmerizing guitar riffs and surfy beats that are their own unique brand of weird lo-fi fuzz. The magnificently bizarre video for the album’s single “Only You” features DeMarco in his birthday suit and covetable pyramid hat partaking in a series of non-sequiturs while drummer Alex Calder does his best-worst Beyonce in “Why Don’t You Love Me” interpretation. Also, grapes.
Stream the entire six-song collection on Bandcamp or add it to your library for a super cheap $4. Soak up the juvenile-genius album art and video for “Only You” after the jump.
