I squinted and smirked in defeat when I discovered that the omnipotent David had made the first post on UMO, a blurb on “How Can You Love Me,” a nifty little lo-fi track with roots in funk r&b, punk, and soul by a band making a home in my library thanks to the co-sign of Vice Mag. Unknown Mortal Orchestra likes to remain slightly elusive on the Who-What-When-Where-Why side of things, which at this point in time in my relationship with them is appreciated on my end. Less peripheral details means more time to get down with the goods, and in the case of the “Nightlight” remix, we’re talkin’ about an attention demanding sampled live break layered with sitar drone, bass grooves, and helium voices. To say this rendition sounds different than Little Dragon’s original version of “Nightlight” would be an understatement. It’s virtually unrecognizable.
