So here’s the good news: Lupe Fiasco‘s new single, “Lilies,” is pretty damn solid. He decided to go with a live sound for this one, which lends itself to sounding richer, more soulful, and veers away from some of his, erm, more questionable beat choices. That being said, the hook from singer Sirah is a bit much. And by that I mean that it’s grating and sounds like something Eminem would use on his latest single, not Lupe.
But, then again, this isn’t the Lupe we all grew to love many moons ago, and he’s probably trying to appease his label with a big chorus like this. I just wish that it didn’t mar such an otherwise sharp track that actually sounds like one of the Chicago rapper’s collaborations with Robert Glasper. For those wondering, the instrumental was provided by frequent collaborators the Buchanans.
You can hear the single below. It’ll appear on his new mixtape, Lost In The Atlantic. No word on when that’s due out, but we do know that his new album, Tetsuo & Youth, drops Jan. 20, 2015.
