If you’re a longtime reader of Potholes, chances are that you have noticed the love we’ve shown to Bay Area artist Blackbird Blackbird over the years. With that in mind, you have to understand the joy that comes with seeing he’s released a brand-new project, Tangerine Sky, even if it did somehow fly under our radar. However, to be fair, we’ve been struck with a smaller staff on the daily-writing tip, though I (Andrew Martin) am trying to shed light on the music I’m really loving as of late. As you can probably imagine, Blackbird Blackbird’s Tangerine Sky falls into that category.
The record contains 11 tracks from the act led by Mikey Maramag, who blends dream-pop and electronic music together while never forgetting to include a strong beat. The guitars and drums end up being some of my favorite parts of the songs on this release, though the vocal work is also worth noting. Maramag’s songwriting approach typically leads to infectious numbers that you’ll especially love this summer, when the temperatures are out of control and you need something more laid-back and bright to complement your afternoon laziness. At least, that’s where I’m at right now.
