If you have visited Potholes in the past, you may recognize Paul White‘s name for his solo work and/or the beats he supplied to Danny Brown, Homeboy Sandman, and others over the years. But now that he’s signed with R&S Records for his new album, Shaker Notes, it sounds like the U.K. artist has gone in a completely different, albeit understandable, direction. On lead single “Honey Cats,” White embraces the blues head on with croaking, falsetto-ish vocals that drift through a sea of horns and organs. What stands out the most, aside from his voice, is his use of drums and bass, both of which sound like they were recorded in a tomb.
