Listen: Nas & Akinyele Unreleased Freestyles From 1991

Well, THIS is cool. Veteran NYC DJ Gudtyme just uploaded this little gem to his Soundcloud. It’s a time capsule from the summer of 1991, featuring a young Nas and Akinyele going back and forth on some classic NYC beats. For a twenty-year-old cassette recording, it sounds great- the verses are (literally) vintage, top-notch Nas, and Akinyele provides a great counterpoint to his snarling, hungry young delivery. They run through a smattering of old-school party beats in just six and a half minutes, bringing you back to the last time you routinely saw high-top fades and day-glo tank tops on dudes, and boy, does it feel good.
