Joey Badass recently released his sophomore album, B4.Da.$$. His music has always represented this mid-90’s nostalgia for Golden Era/New York hip-hop, even though he’s born in 1995. Depending on your individual taste, that’s either refreshing, an homage or a reminder to go play A Tribe Called Quest’s Midnight Marauders real soon. Talent aside, I wish he would inject more of himself in his music versus the constant tribute to an era he reveres.
Flying Lotus premiered a new song by Joey Badass on his BBC Radio 1 residency titled, “Perception vs. Reality”. The string-heavy song sounds eerily reminiscent of Nas’ “Nas Is Like” rocking over DJ Premier production. And again, this is sort of the comfort zone we’re accustomed to with Joey Badass. None the less, the song is decent, and introspective about surviving street life. But sonically, I just wish he would go for a more experimental pallet, since he’s usually opted for 90’s sounding production in his previous work.
