Joey Bada$$ was relatively quiet in 2014. In the time between the critical acclaim of 1999 and now, it seemed like a whole new crop of rookies popped up. It largely felt like Joey was being overshadowed, but it might have been that Joey was sharpening his skill for his debut album. While Joey has released music since 1999, it all felt like a stop gap as fans diligently waited for Joey to make his claim for the crown of New York City.
With the latest releases from his debut album B4.DA.$$, Joey is making a case that 2015 is his for the taking With “On and On” featuring Maverick Sabre & Dyemond Lewis, Joey floats over a nostalgic boom-bap beat provided by Freddie Joachim. However, what makes “On and On” a departure from what we’ve come to expect from Joey is its sprinkles of looking to the future. Joey spits effortlessly about the losses he has suffered this year, over triumphant synths that sound like something classic Outkast would be comfortable trading bars over. As Joey asserts in the beginning, “I just booked a first class ticket to my destiny.” With “On and On,” Joey’s destiny might be a NY classic.
