Listen: Joell Ortiz Responds To Kendrick Lamar’s “King of New York” Claim On “Control”

Joell OrtizLate last night, Kendrick Lamar stirred up a shitstorm with his show-stealing verse on Big Sean’s “Control” and ever since, the entire planet has weighed in on the track. In particular, everyone has been talking about when the Compton rapper rattled off a list of other rappers he sees as his competition while calling himself the king of New York.

As expected, plenty of MCs weren’t going to hear that and just be like, “OH YOU RIGHT!” Joell Ortiz is the first, as far as I know, to respond with his own take on the No I.D. instrumental and here are my immediate thoughts:

  1. Joell can spit with the best of ’em and sounds fantastic here.
  2. His bars are cohesive and consistent, which is nice considering, yes, Kendrick kind of hopped all over the place.
  3. It’s, again, the first response so everything is still fresh.
  4. I really hope a lot of terrible rappers don’t hop on the beat but they obviously will.
  5. I promise not to post too many of these responses. Only the good ones, like when everyone and their grandmother tried spitting over “Otis”.
  6. I wish the Slaughterhouse dudes could make better albums, both as a unit and solo.
  7. Please let Royce Da 5’9″ rock over this. He’s obviously not from New York and probably won’t do it but I could go for some new Nickel-Nine bars.
  8. I liked Big Sean and Jay Electronica’s verses just fine on the original version of “Control”.
  9. I’m hungry.
