As it originally appears on his Welcome to Fazoland mixtape, “Fight or Flight” is a powerful solo performance by Chicago rapper Lil Herb. He uses the fantastic, vocal sample-heavy instrumental to reflect on all of his lost friends, the life he’s lived thus far, and how most people aren’t to be trusted. Many of the same messages remain on the newly released remix, especially because the first verse remains intact. However, now Herb has some back-up for one of the illest songs to hit the web this week.
Fellow Windy City spitters Common and Chance The Rapper appear on the revamped “Fight or Flight” and it’s f_cking great. Chance’s verse is especially potent, that is until Herb hops back on the beat with a rap-so-hard-it-hurts new verse. He bursts through shouting “Look! I seen mamas treat they daughters like the scum of the earth!” followed by lines about loving success because he’s from the struggle and crying less and less at all his homies’ funerals.
