Those of us following the Lil B “phenomena” have known damn well that a collaboration of this magnitude and general mind-fuckery was inevitable. It’s been… interesting… watching the twitter feeds of “classic” hip-hop proponents like Phontigallo, 9th, and Jean Greasy pop almost identically to Lil B’s with RT’s up the wazoo of breathless fan adorations, hashtags galore, swags, and #Based references interspersed with quips sure to put conceptually stubborn “real hip-hop” fans back in the barber’s chair. Everyone seems to be playing ball with Lil B, who, while being one of the most provocative cultural and artistic forces to sweep hip-hop in a while, is ironically actually not exactly the most on-point emcee. But like Clams Casino in the past and 9th Wonder in the present have proved, that little catch is nothing an incredible beat made of strings and bass can’t fix in a snap. Welcome to sample-based hip-hop, based god.
