Remember how it was revealed that Lauryn Hill signed a record contract as a means of paying off her tax debt? Well, we’re now hearing the first fruits of her recent labor in new single “Neurotic Society”. She is using the parenthetical reference “Compulsory Mix”, which refers to the fact she had to rush to get this very political and socially conscious track. Here’s how she described the process of recording and releasing the rapid-fire “Neurotic Society”:
Here is a link to a piece that I was ‘required’ to release immediately, by virtue of the impending legal deadline. I love being able to reach people directly, but in an ideal scenario, I would not have to rush the release of new music… but the message is still there. In light of Wednesday’s tragic loss (of former label mate Chris Kelly), I am even more pressed to YELL this to a multitude that may not understand the cost of allowing today’s unhealthy paradigms to remain unchecked!

This is hot garbage. Lauryn needs to get her sang on, pronto. Recruit the Dap Kings, records a throwback record ala Back to Black, pay off her tax bill in 1 fell swoop and disappear for another a decade having left some good music behind.

It’s great to hear new music from her, it really is. But you can hear this same subject matter at any local poetry slam. What else you got Ms. Hill?
I really hope the entire album isn’t as “compulsory” as this track. Those type of albums don’t do too well.
her delivery is strong and yet for some reason this song leaves me cold, for some reason i’m given this sense of ‘i know all this shit already tell me something i don’t know’, i’m not feeling this track maybe on repeated listens i might warm up to it
Damn… Conscious hip hop. Vocal delivery is top notch. Hope to hear more of this all over.
