Pithy Potholes contributor Johnathan Kochis hipped us to Keor Meteor a few months ago, and we’ve been hooked ever since. The Parisian beatmaker’s penchant for lacing up smoky basement jazz with deft hip-hop samples landed his Cornerstone Cashiers EP on our Top 25 Instrumental Albums of 2011, and he continues to roll out more goodness in 2012.
Here we have two tracks from Keor’s soon-to-drop EP that suggest an experiment with more contemporary and politically-charged music, though not in that Zack de la Rocha eat-your-face kind of way. On track “MegaUpload”, Keor simply takes sound bytes from news anchors’ reports on the dramatic downfall of MegaUpload and interweaves them with his own signature jazzy production. Similarly on track “Bring it to ya face”, Keor takes Ron Paul’s public criticism of U.S. foreign policy that left Tea Party people booing and hissing (hooray, freedom of speech, but only if we agree with you!) and brilliantly serves it up on a bed of silky piano keys and cool drums.
One can only imagine how many Xanax pills would be spared if the presidential race were reported to the tune of smooth horn flutters and hip-hop vocal loops.
Hit the skip to stream both tracks.
