Like the Blackbird Blackbird remix we posted about last week, Juj‘s “Summer” makes one think of summer. But it’s a bit of a chicken or the egg scenario. Does it really feel like a summer-y track or does the word summer induce summer-y thoughts? One one hand, I could see the song being played in the background of a two minute Nike commercial featuring skateboarders in a southern California city. They would be cruising down a sloping hill as the sun rises, all while reminding you that the footwear titan is still hip enough to feature the beats of a wedidit crew member. ‘
On the other hand, I could argue that “Spring” would have been an equally appropriate title. With its shortened chops of what is likely an old soul singer, and sounds gliding in and out of the track, like floaters, calmly moving about your eye, there’s a mellowness that you wouldn’t associate with screaming adolescents, free from any mathematical equations. So, is it spring? Or is it 6:45 a.m. in the summer? I won’t tell you how to think. It’s a big decision, but I trust your judgment.
