James Pants – “Driftwood”

James Pants – “Driftwood”

I first learned of James Pants a few years ago, when his pretty solid debut, Welcome, dropped on Stones Throw. Considering how that label rarely misses a step, I had to check out the then-latest signing to the roster. Fittingly, Pants’ project was filled with a funky, left-field breed of hip-hop that fit right in with his contemporaries and Stones Throw cohorts. He then switched things up a bit for his successful follow-up, Seven Seals, but apparently his newest project, the New Tropical EP, looks to return to his roots. And here we have the first leak from the project. “Driftwood” is a sample-laced, bass-heavy headnodder that’s just equal parts oddball and awesome.

Hey there is an area in Toronto called Driftwood… I live a few blocks from there.

Back to the music, good stuff.
