Straight out of our mailbox comes this lady-centric remix from The 83rd, a producer out of the NY area. The Bjork bits he’s chopped up, spliced, and looped, sound awfully Joanna Newsom to me. I’ve always thought Joanna is an incredible songwriter, but her overly put-on baby voice is just too much throughout an entire record, which is why I often enjoy covers of her songs more than the originals. When served in tablespoon amounts however, sample gurus like The Roots and Nottz know well that her pre-school whine is wicked effective as a hook. To a similar effect in The 83rd’s remix, Bjork’s nasal swoops are an asset because of the way they are offset against Badu’s rounded chest timbres to create a sense of balance in the arrangement. Any way, except for the sonic resemblance, this track has nothing to do with Joanna Newsom. But if you dig that distinctive whine I speak of and you’re curious to hear more, you should definitely check that magical chick out.
