Sometimes, it takes the right nudge, in this case it’s a shove, to make you wake the fuck up to some new music worth hearing. In this case, it was the New York Times‘ glowing write up of a new mixtape from Greensboro, N.C.’s J.K. The Rapper. Although dude was on my radar thanks to his affiliation with producer Simon SMTHNG, I somehow kept snoozin’.
Not anymore. I promptly download, fired up, and burned through A Iller Life with pleasure yesterday. There’s plenty of braggadocio on here, but there’s also blunted insight that arrives within waves of shit-talkin’ and smart observation. It doesn’t hurt that the tape has some of the strongest production you haven’t heard.
