You know how the second part of “Lift Off” off Kanye West and Jay-Z’s Watch The Throne completely owns the first part? Well, J. Cole realized that, too, and decided to spit over the brassy backdrop, reverbing Beyonce vocals and all. Oh, and he decided to murk it, something we always look forward to from the Fayetteville, N.C. native.
And let me be real for a second. I have said and written some salty things about Cole, mostly because I was ridiculously let down by his proper debut, Cole World: The Sideline Story. It was upon hearing that project that I decided he was merely a mixtape rapper, though I must admit his skills as a producer continue to flourish. I mean, did you hear what he crafted for King Mez?
Anyway, here’s to Cole fully embracing himself and making another solid mixtape or, perhaps, putting his all into his sophomore album. Stream “The Cure” below.

haha I know!
see A.M. we can get along 🙂
I agree with all of that.
I never really dug Bobby Ray but dude had the potential to not just be a rap-pop sell-out.
As for Wale, I’ve liked some of his stuff on his albums, but they just have felt kind of all over the place. And I think people hate him for his MMG stuff.
I agree on it being a little bloated.
K.r.i.t. – sounded like he was running out of steam.
Wale – i actually liked his second LP. dude is the most hated rapper alive for some reason.
B.o.B. – was never a fan. he rich now though, so good for him lol
rappers put more of their early career energy into mixtapes cause thats what helps them get noticed and create buzz. on the albums they know they already in the public eye and probabaly relax a little.
Really? I thought it was bloated. Sucks that most major label debuts by guys like Cole, K.R.I.T., Wale, B.o.B, etc… have been letdowns.
Dude dropped one album and it was still better than most major label albums/debuts.
bwahahaha, looks like I got a hater in the U.K.
Anyway, a “mixtape rapper” is someone who excels outside of the confines of label BS, which might be the case with Cole. And dude’s dropped enough material (read: mixtapes) for me to come to that conclusion.
And know why I came to that conclusion? Because I’m hoping he proves me wrong.
A.A. loves to hate on any rapper that doesn’t exceed his expectations (the only way to do that is come out as being bi sexual)
J.cole a mixtape rapper? what the fuck is a mixtape rapper? how early is it in his career to say things like that.
i was let down by his debut album too but it wasnt bad, his mixtapes were just amazing and the album grows on you. i blame the kinda lackluster album on jay z wanting radio singles and some very mediocre beats. I wish j.cole signed to good music and got his hands on all those kanye & NO ID beats.
get ready to be disapointed by jay electronica debut..
