I think these groups aligned themselves too much with the underground fashion and sneaker scene where trends bounce in and out of style within months. Unfortunately the way they projected their look fell victim to that turn over rate in trends. Not to mention as talented as some of these guys are it seems like they try to make bad music. Every group you mentioned will be a stain in hip hop or will enter the mainstream market and cease to deliver to hip hop anyways. Most of the artists up here don't have that great of beats, presence, or even good lyrics. I think the only thing they had going for them was 80s retro (which came and went real quick). Quit jocking these clowns. They were place holders until the greats made their comebacks, and the new stars step up.

@Trek Life Your right, but the corporates feed into that by ensuring promotion dollars are invested in the packaging since they can sell that. God forbid they actually promote good music instead. So to the average consumer its image first, music second. It's definitely up to artists to reinvent themselves to remain relevant outside of trends.

Thanks for the comment.

Unfortunately, the cold part about it is. Good music finds it difficult to outlast failing trends. There can be several artist that actually are DOPE, but get swept under the rug because they are part of a movement that people got tired of. This isn't just isolated to hip-hop. This has a lot to do with people looking at the packaging of things as opposed to actually checking the product. Once any trend fades, doesn't matter who you are, you either need to do well at switching your style up, or go down with the ship.

If the music is dope, it doesn't really make a big difference to me whether the artist dresses a certain way and so forth. But if they abuse that to gain a bigger fanbase, they're only hurting themselves by narrowing down their fanbase to a specific crowd. From an artist stand point (for me) it would hurt a lot because if i really wanted to do a collaboration with a certain artist, and my style seems to be narrowed down to a certain crowd, i doubt the artist would be enthused about doing that collab much. It would suck for me, but i dont know about these 'hipster' artists. I don't know if it's dead since the year isn't even half way yet, but it's getting close. We'll see what goes down. haha
